Temporary Changes to Kresge Library Assignment/Exam Services & TEXTPAK pickup (Dec. 14 - Jan. 11

The Kresge Library Services offices are being remodeled to accommodate the Office of Digital Education staff joining our suite (K4511).  To accommodate this work, we will be relocating our service point and staff offices to the Executive Residence's 2nd Floor hallway corridor from Friday, December 14th through Friday, January 11th.

This will impact both Kresge's Assignment/Exam Services and the student pickup of TEXTPAKS.  We are not sure if we will be able to accept book deliveries from the main library at this time.

Here is a listing of key dates for this move.  These are subject to change:
  • Thursday December 13th - Last day to operate in Kresge Library Services Suite (K4521)
  • Friday December 14th - Move operations to the 2nd Floor Corridor (the offices closest to the Blau connector).  Students will go there to review documents and Faculty Support should go there to deliver items to distribute.
  • Monday December 19th - Course materials go on sale to students (notification through Canvas)
  • Friday December 21st - Our last day open for 2018.
  • Wednesday January 2nd - We open up after the holidays.
  • Monday January 7th - First day for students to pickup TEXTPAKs for Winter Term (in 2nd Floor Corridor).
  • Monday January 14th - Return to Kresge Library Services Suite (K4521) and normal operations.

If you have not submitted your WN19 course materials, please complete the form (https://goo.gl/forms/bbrUz5daLIV1M3Pn1) right away. Late submission may take longer to finalize due to the move to the interim space and the move back to K4511 (staff will have downtime during both moves in order to take down and then set-up their cubicles).

RefWorks Subscription Cancellation

The University of Michigan's subscription to RefWorks will expire at the end of December 2018 and will not be renewed.

This decision was made based on a steady decline in RefWorks usage paired with the availability of free or low-costs options that function as well as or better than Refworks. Additionally, RefWorks is introducing a new platform that would have required all of our users to migrate their account and learn a new tool as the legacy product is retired.

Existing RefWorks users will be contacted via email before the start of the fall semester and provided with options and support for transitioning to another citation management tool. An FAQ will also be developed to guide users in this transition. An additional email will be sent before the end of the fall semester with a final reminder about migrating. More information about the RefWorks transition plan will be shared at the Public Services Communication Forum (PSCF) on Friday, July 20.

The University of Michigan will continue to offer support for EndNote and EndNote Basic, Mendeley, and Zotero. Support for transitioning from RefWorks to another product is available by emailing scholarspace@umich.edu. Users of the Taubman Health Sciences Library can email thlibrary@umich.edu.

Unlimited Access to O'Reilly Safari Books Online

Safari Tech Books Online has been upgraded to the new O'Reilly Safari Books Online platform, which provides unlimited access for all current U-M students, faculty and staff to even more books, plus new videos, tutorials, case histories, and learning paths.

Access 40,000+ technical books, videos, tutorials, case studies, and learning paths from O'Reilly & Associates, The Pearson Technology Group (including Addison-Wesley, Alpha, Financial Times Prentice Hall, Cisco Press, New Riders, Peachpit Press, Prentice Hall PTR, Que and Sams) and other publishers.

The new platform requires entry of your U-M email address (in the format: uniqname@umich.edu) to obtain temporary access, which results in you receiving email messages inviting you to create a permanent O'Reilly Safari account.  You are not required to create a permanent account unless you want to use personalized features or the smart phone app version.  You may obtain temporary access as many times as you wish.

Access to the O'Reilly Safari Books Online platform is available on the Kresge Library A-Z Database list.

7th Annual Kresge Food Drive

From Friday March 30st through Friday June 1, 2018 Kresge Library Services will be hosting our 7th annual food drive for Washtenaw County food banks.  Each year during our food drives,  we have collected over 50 boxes of food thanks to the generosity of the Ross Community.  Donations include:

  • Non-perishable food products
  •  Contained in factory-sealed containers
  • Currently not expired products
  • Not in glass containers (most food banks avoid these as they can break in transit)
  • Sealed, non used personal products (razors, tooth paste, diapers, shampoo, soap etc)

Please drop off donations on the Kresge Library Services suite (K4521) on the 4th floor of Kresge Hall, or at the front desk in the Winter Garden.

Rescuing Endangered Government Information - January 26

Business relies on a wide range of U.S. government data for daily decision making.  Since the beginning of the Trump Administration, access to it is changing.

On Friday, January 26th at 2pm in Ross Room 1210, Justin Schell, Director of the Shapiro Design Lab at the University of Michigan Libraries and one of the organizers of last year’s Ann Arbor Data Rescue Event, will talk about the current availability of government information and the efforts taken to protect, preserve and maintain access to it.

Join the Special Libraries Association and Kresge Library Services at this event. For more information, see http://michigan.sla.org/2018/01/jan-26-event-rescuing-endangered-government-information-where-are-we-after-one-year/
